It's Tax Time. Somehow I found some time to catch up with ParenteBeard Partner Tom Spychalski at the height of it all.
He mentions some useful tips for aspiring accountants and accounting interns.

Q – How long have you been working in public accounting?
A –
Since 1979. My first job after graduating from Rutgers University was working for a sole practitioner.

Q – What first attracted you to public accounting?
A –
Once I learned public accounting experience was required to obtain my CPA license, I started building my public accounting experience. I’ve been enjoying it ever since. It’s an honor to be a client’s trusted advisor, helping with tax and non-tax matters. Client relationships are the best part of my role, going beyond the numbers.

Q – It’s tax time. What is your favorite tax tip for small businesses and other companies?
A – Small businesses should take advantage of all the available tax deductions and credits. Some small businesses still do not have a retirement plan. It is never too late to set up a plan to help defer income.

Q – Do you have a tax tip you offer to individual filers?
A –
The simplest way to recall your charitable donations and medical bills is to review all your credit card bills and checkbook statements. This information will be needed when you sit down to file your taxes.

Q – What advice can you offer aspiring accountants and college seniors looking to land an accounting internship this summer?
A –
Expand your horizons! Keep an open mind and consider an internship at a small or medium-sized accounting firm. You will have great opportunities to learn, participate and maybe even prepare a tax return. By looking beyond a big four firm, you may have more hands-on experience to add on your resume.

Q – We see you are involved with the Arthritis Foundation New Jersey Chapter. How did you first become involved in the organization?
A –
Ten years ago an attorney contact encouraged me to join the Foundation. A year and a half later, I became chair of a committee and worked up to become chair of the Foundation’s New Jersey Chapter. I am now a member of the Northeast Regional Board. What first attracted me has kept me involved ever since: the chance to help people suffering with arthritis by informing them about the Foundation’s many resources and programs. Arthritis affects people of all ages.

Q – Do you have any goals as Regional and Local Board Member?
A –
To continue building the Arthritis Foundation’s brand. The Foundation name is not as recognized as larger brands such as the American Cancer Association or Susan G. Komen. However, the Arthritis Foundation delivers products that are just as valuable – education, resources and programs that help people of all ages coping with arthritis.

Fundraising is the number one priority this year. The more public support we receive, the more research can be funded and more programs can be offered. Financial support is crucial to our organization’s future and our board is working hard to gain new supporters each day. We have walks, runs and other events throughout the year.

Q – On a fun note, what is your favorite place for a business lunch?
Macaroni Grill in Edison, NJ (521 U.S. 1).
